Headed the University of Minnesota architecture program and designed the landmark Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. His career continued well into his 90s. He was born with a deformed right arm, which was amputated, so he learned to draw with his left. His architecture degrees were earned from the University of Michigan and the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He was taught at Cranbrook by the famed Eliel Saarinen.
