Belgian scientist and religious leader who was a Roman Catholic priest and became the first person to propose the theory of the expansion of the Universe. He was also the first person to derive Hubble's law. He studied civil engineering at the Universit' catholique de Louvain when he was 17 and served as an artillery officer in the Belgian army during World War I.
