An American chemist who won the Nobel Prize in 1949 for his studies of the properties of matter at temperatures close to absolute zero. His work helped lead the way towards the creation of more efficient refrigerators. He obtained a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1922 after receiving his bachelor's there.
