Steelers fire offensive coordinator Matt Canada amid fourth season with team

"I did not come to this decision lightly," Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters on Tuesday, per ESPN.com. "It's my role to absorb and protect those that I work with. This doesn't feel like that. I'm not assigning blame or deflecting in any way. ... Just rest assured that this decision was not taken lightly. I've got a lot of respect for Matt personally and professionally."

Steelers quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan and running backs coach Eddie Faulkner will share the coordinator duties in the wake of Canada's firing, NFL Network Insiders Mike Garafolo and Tom Pelissero reported. Faulkner is expected to take over as interim OC, and Sullivan, who has previous coordinator experience with the New York Giants and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, will handle the play-calling.

Canada joined the Steelers as quarterbacks coach in 2020 and was elevated to OC in 2021, replacing Randy Fichtner. A long-time college offensive coordinator, Canada was expected to modernize Pittsburgh's offense, utilizing motions and updating the passing operation. Instead, the Steelers got a knockoff scheme that lacked any semblance of cohesion, rarely pressured the defense deep and lacked consistency across the board.
