Former heavyweight wrestling champion who won a gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics. He also won a bronze medal at the 1980 Summer Olympics. After retiring from competitive wrestling, he took up work as a wrestling coach. He began his training in wrestling at Progresul Bucuresti under the guidance of wrestling champion Dumitru P rvulescu.
