German physicist who received the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics for the advancement of super-resolved fluorescence microscopy. He founded the Nanobiophotonics department at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry and has served as a professor at the Heidelberg University Faculty of Physics and Astronomy. He grew up in Santana, Romania before leaving for West Germany with his parents in 1978.
