Famous for his research in the fields of pharmacognosy and ethnopharmacology, this American scientist became a well known proponent of psychedelic medications and was one of the founders of the Heffter Research Institute. After earning a botany degree from the University of Hawaii, he received a Ph.D. in the same field from the University of British Columbia and subsequently completed post-doctoral work at both Stanford University and the National Institute of Mental Health.
