Famous for touring and recording with jazz saxophonist Illinois Jacquet, he is also notable for his session work with Dexter Gordon, Oliver Nelson, Leo Parker, and Sonny Stitt. He began playing the piano at a young age; at around age twelve, he started learning both bass and tuba. Early in his career, he performed with jazz drummer Kaiser Marshall.
