British astrophysicist who has served as one of the four directors of the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics. He received a B.A. in Mathematics from Jesus College, Cambridge at the University of Cambridge in 1972 and a M.Sc. in Astronomy from the University of Toronto in 1974.
