After serving during the late 1990s as Bulgarian Minister of the Interior, this Communist-turned-Independent politician led an unsuccessful 2001 campaign for his country's presidency. Before entering politics, he studied law at Sofia University and worked for a decade as a major crimes detective with the Sofia Police Directorate.
