Artist and architect who designed civic buildings in the post-World War II reconstruction. Also known as the widely published cartoonist, Acanthus, appearing in Punch, the Sunday Telegraph, The New Yorker, and The Builder. He was sometimes published as Hope in the Sunday Express. He won a scholarship at age 15 to the Bartlett School of Building at University College London. His first taste of public recognition came when he won the 1930s design competition for London's Gatwick Airport's first terminal building.
