An author specializing in Native American history, he is known for works such as The Osage: An Ethnohistorical Study of Hegemony on the Prairie-Plains (1992) and The Comanche: The Indians of North America Series (1989). He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in history from New Mexico State University. He later earned his Ph.D. from Texas Tech University.
