Canadian poet, novelist, children's book author, and translator known for The Fire-Eaters, The Shadow-Maker, Afterworlds, and other works. She received the prestigious Governor General's Award in 1969. She grew up in Toronto as the daughter of a mentally disturbed and often institutionalized mother and an alcoholic father.
