Notable for his acclaimed young adult novels The Running Man (2004) and Don't Call Me Ishmael (2006), he received a 2005 Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book of the Year Award for the former work and the 2007 Children's Peace Prize for the latter. Before beginning his career as a writer, he studied English at the University of Queensland and taught at high schools in his native Australia.
