University of Chicago archaeologist who led the study of prehistoric Middle East cultures. In his decades-long career he uncovered among the earliest known human structures and tools, as well as the earliest clothing piece. He began his archaeologic research by traveling to Syria in 1933 to work on a team under James Henry Breasted.
