Navajo painter whose best-known works included portraits of strong Native American women and "Natoma," a patinated bronze sculpture. He was called the Picasso of American Indian art by the New York Times. His 1958 trip to Mexico inspired him to become an artist, and he moved to San Francisco to begin his career.
