Poet and 1964 Pulitzer Prize recipient whose best- known works include At the End of the Open Road and Struggling Times. After publishing The Owner of the House: New Collected Poems, 1940 2001, he was a finalist for the Griffin Poetry Prize. He studied at Columbia University and at the University of Paris. He published his debut poetry collection, The Arrivistes, in 1949.
