Known for such feminist-themed performance art pieces as Dress Suits to Hire and Well of Horniness, she earned numerous honors for her work, including an Obie Award, a Lambda Book Award, and several National Endowment for the Arts grants. After graduating from Kalamazoo College in Michigan, she relocated to New York City and began performing at the city's Women's One World (WOW) Cafe.
