Affiliated with the Indian National Congress Party, this twentieth-century politician held office as Chief Minister of Punjab from 1992 until his assassination in 1995. Previously, he had served as a Vidhan Sabha (political assembly) member in India's Punjab state. After graduating from Government College Lahore, he briefly served in the Indian military before beginning his political career.
