Remembered as the youngest mayor elected in the United States during the early 1980s, this Democrat-turned-Independent took office at age twenty-three as Mayor of Opa-locka, Florida. He also served in the Florida House of Representatives and led an unsuccessful United States Senate campaign. After graduating from the University of Miami in the late 1970s, he briefly worked in the insurance industry before beginning his political career.
