Known for his designs of university buildings and campuses, particularly for the first educational skyscraper, the University of Pittsburgh's Cathedral of Learning. He studied architecture at the Pennsylvania Museum's School of Industrial Art. He began working for Theophilus Parsons Chandler, Jr., when he was 15. He was named chief draughtsman at Day & Brother in 1900, through which he would eventually form a partnership with Frank Miles Day.
