A Canadian-born author, screenwriter, and essayist, he is best known for such novels as The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, Barney's Version, and Solomon Gursky Was Here. He is also known for his Jacob Two-Two children's fiction series. He began college in Montreal, Quebec, but dropped out at the age of nineteen to move to Paris. He later moved to London, where he wrote the majority of his novels.
