A Twentieth-century American writer of Western novels, he is known for works such as The Golden Bowl, Boy Almighty, and This is the Year. He coined the term "Siouxland" to describe the area where the states of Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Iowa intersect. He worked as a sports reporter for The Minneapolis Journal.
