David Moyes' first course as West Ham manager was a familiar East end dish - pie and trash.

Unbelievably lethargic for 40 minutes, the Hammers missed gilt-edged chances either side of the interval.

But the verdict of travelling fans was emphatic, and they serenaded their team with the songbook of the damned: Sack The Board, You're Not Fit To Wear The Shirt and an unrepeatable chorus about vice-chair Baroness Karren Brady.

If there was any doubt before, there is none now. West Ham are facing a relegation battle this winter.

These imposters are not pearly kings – they are the poorly kings of English football.

Moyes was unable to save Sunderland from the drop last season, and if he is hoping to salvage his reputation at the Taxpayers Stadium, he is facing an almighty battle to turn this ship round.

Amid the widespread astonishment at West Ham's feebleness, Watford head coach Marco Silva's uncertain future was almost forgotten for 90 minutes... almost, but not quite.

The smart money is still on Silva to defect to Everton, but if this performance proves to be his parting gift to the Hornets, he is leaving them in rude health.
