Rife started his November 15 Netflix special, âÂÂNatural Selection,â with a story set at a âÂÂratchetâ Baltimore restaurant where the hostess had a âÂÂfull black eye,â and, Rife said, it was âÂÂpretty obvious what happened,â seemingly alluding to domestic violence.

As part of the joke, Rife continued, saying the restaurant âÂÂshould put her in the kitchen or something where nobody has to see her face,â before adding the punchline: âÂÂIf she could cook, she wouldnâÂÂt have that black eye.âÂÂ

During the taped special, Rife responded to some in the audience who were shocked at the story, saying he was âÂÂtesting the water, seeing if yâÂÂall are going to be fun or not,â adding he thought that if he started the show joking about domestic violence, the rest of the show would be âÂÂpretty smooth sailing.âÂÂ
