Before flying back to Chicago for training camp on Sunday, Bears linebacker Jerrell Freeman was enjoying a tasty brisket sandwich (something he says he’s not supposed to be eating!) from Austin–Bergstrom International Airport’s Salt Lick, when he noticed a fellow BBQ lover choking at a nearby table.
Marcus Ryan, also eating some brisket, suddenly stood up with a look of concern on his face.
“Like he had forgotten something and was about to go running for it,” Freeman told the Chicago Tribune. “But then he went around the table and started to look a little frantic. I’m thinking, ‘Man, this is odd. Maybe one of his kids walked off and he can’t find his kid or something?’ ”
It didn’t take long for Freeman to realize Ryan was choking and to rush to his aide. The NFL star performed the Heimlich himself, twice, before Ryan recovered.
“When I put him down the second time, his eyes got big,” recalls Freeman. “He was like, ‘Oh, my god! I think you just saved my life, man!’ It was crazy.”
....CRAZY!! Just saved my guy Marcus Ryan's life by using the Heimlich maneuver in the middle of the Austin airport! WOW Mom would be proud haha pic.twitter.com/yzgGw967iO
