King of Denmark from 1588 until 1648. He reigned for nearly 60 years, making him one of the longest-reigning monarchs in Scandinavian history, including throughout Europe's Thirty Years' War. He is buried at Roskilde Cathedral in Copenhagen. His father died when he was 10, making him heir to the throne; however, he did not officially begin his rule until age 19.
