American lawyer and Democratic politician who is best known for serving as the 41st governor of Wisconsin from 1983 until 1987. He also served three terms in the Wisconsin State Assembly, representing Marathon County. In 1958, he graduated from Michigan State University. He earned a J.D. from the University of Chicago.
