Civil rights icon who pushed for her daughter Ruby Bridges to integrating the previously all-White William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1960. She was called one of the mothers of the Civil Rights Movement in New Orleans by then-New Orleans mayor LaToya Cantrell in 2020. She was originally born in Mississippi to sharecroppers.
