Italian politician who is known for having served as Vice-President of the European Commission as well as President of the Foreign Affairs Council High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. She is a member of the Democratic Party of Italy and has also served as Italy's Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.' She studied Political Science at the Sapienza University of Rome where she wrote her final dissertation on Islam and politics. She started as a member of the Italian Communist Youth Federation in 1988. She became a member of the National Council of the Democrats of the Left in 2001. She became a member of the Chamber of Deputies in May of 2008 and later gained attention as the Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2014.
