A Twentieth-century French author, she is best known for her Angelique books, which are set in the time of Louis XIV. She became known to her English readers as Sergeanne Golon. She was interested in painting and writing in her youth. She published her first novel, The Country From Behind My Eyes, when she was just eighteen years old.
