Expressionist painter whose best-known works included "The Wooden Horse" and "Luxembourg." His late paintings of clowns (i.e., his 1936 work "Clown avec accordeon") were expressions of his pain and inner turmoil upon facing a mysterious and long-lasting illness. He studied art at the Munich Academy and at the Luxembourg Ecole d'Artisans. While at Munich, he became acquainted with Wilhelm Leibl's style of painting.
