An acclaimed American author of novels, short stories, essays, and screenplays, he is known for works such as The Bushwacked Piano and The Sporting Club. His third novel, Ninety-Two in the Shade, was nominated for the National Book Award. He used the proceeds from the publication of his first novel to purchase a ranch in Montana. The Montana landscape figured into many of his subsequent works.
