Liberal democrat who served as the Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1977 to 1987. During his 34 years in Congress he also served as the House Majority Leader and the House Majority Whip. An avid baseball fan, he got his nickname from a baseball player of the time known for fouling off pitch after pitch until the pitcher finally walked him.
