An American writer of historical novels, he is best known for Northwest Passage, Arundel, and Rabble in Arms. He posthumously received a Pulitzer Prize Special Citation for his body of literature. He graduated from Cornell University and began his literary career as a journalist for the Saturday Evening Post.
