An American writer and broadcaster, he is known for such sports novels as Iron Duke and The Kid from Tompkinsville. He also became known for his sports column in the New Yorker magazine. After graduating from Harvard University and serving in the U.S. Army during World War I, he freelanced as a sports writer and competed in tennis tournaments.
