An English-born author who wrote about her experiences as a settler in Canada, she is best remembered for Roughing it in the Bush, an 1852 memoir. Her novels include Mark Hurdlestone, The World Before Them, and Flora Lyndsay, and her works of children's fiction include The Little Quaker and The Sailor Brother. She published her debut children's book, Spartacus, in the early 1820s.
