American poet and four-time Pushcart Prize recipient whose best-known works include Ghost Money and The Only World. She received both a Carl Sandburg Award and an Edwin Ford Piper Award for a 1991 poetry collection entitled Star Ledger. She ran away from home at age sixteen, shortly after receiving a scholarship to Princeton University. She earned degrees years later from both the University of Arkansas and Johns Hopkins University.
