Abstract Expressionist and Color Field painter whose best known works included "1957-D No. 1" and "1947-Y-No. 2." Revered by the first generation of Abstract Expressionists. He was educated primarily on the West Coast, which was unusual for Abstract Expressionists, many of whom hailed from New York.
