Remembered for his decades-long collaboration with fellow English comedian Eric Morecambe, he was associated with several popular comedy programs on the ATV, BBC, and ITV networks. He and Morecambe were particularly adored among British audiences for their Christmas comedy specials. He began his entertainment career as a music hall performer; later, he contributed to a comedic BBC radio program called Band Waggon.
