Finnish Social Democratic politician who served as President of Finland during the 1980s and early 1990s. Prior to being elected President, he served as Finland's Prime Minister (from 1968 to 1970 and again from 1979 to 1982). Before beginning his political career, he held executive positions at the Helsinki Workers' Savings Bank and at the Bank of Finland.
