Initially notable as a philanthropist and heir to the Du Pont family's business and thoroughbred racing fortunes, he later became infamous for murdering Olympic gold medalist and World Championship-winning wrestler Dave Schultz, who, at the time of his death, was working at Du Pont's Foxcatcher Farm estate. After briefly attending the University of Pennsylvania, he earned a bachelor's degree in zoology from the University of Miami and a doctorate from Villanova University and subsequently pursued his interests in ornithology (the study of birds), conchology (the study of shells), and amateur sports.
