Notable for her work on both stage and screen, she earned a Tony nomination for her portrayal of Flora Goforth in the 1963 Broadway production of The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore and an Oscar nomination for her role as Elspeth in the 1959 film Room at the Top. She made her film debut as Calamity Kate in the 1927 feature A Daughter in Revolt.
