An American children's author, he is best known for Midnight and Jeremiah (1943) and the Newbery Honor-winning Rascal (1963). He also worked as a reporter and editor for the New York Sun and the Chicago Daily News. He briefly attended the University of Chicago. His best-selling book, Rascal, is a memoir of a year spent with his pet raccoon; his other books similarly introduce readers to the wildlife and landscape of his native Wisconsin.
