Writer, ethnographer, and historian who was a key figure in the Lithuanian national revival. His works include an 1838 history of Lithuania and several collections of Samogitian and Lithuanian folk tales. He received a law degree from Vilnius University. He subsequently worked as a translator in Riga, Latvia.
