British Labour Party politician who became a Member of Parliament for St Helens South and Whiston in 2001. He also became Secretary of State for Northern Ireland in 2007 and Shadow Secretary of State in 2010. He studied English literature at Jesus College, Cambridge, and attended Harvard University as a Kennedy Scholar.
