An American fiction writer, he is best known for works such as Free Agents (1984) and The Propheteers (1987). He also wrote the screenplay for the 1995 film, Roommates. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and subsequently taught creative writing at Rice University for nearly three decades.
