Spanish poet, critic, academic, and 1978 recipient of Spain's highest literary honor, the Premio Cervantes. His best-known works include Hijos de la ira (poetry) and Poesia de San Juan de la Cruz (literary criticism). He studied philosophy, literature, and law in his younger years and later taught at several European universities.
