US Senator from Oregon who served in the Senate from 1946 to 1969 as a Republican, Independent, and Democrat. He is best known for his early opposition to the Vietnam War and for leading several anti-war marches and protests. He grew up on a farm and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin Madison in 1923
