Considered the most important nineteenth-century Welsh novelist, Owen famously penned an 1885 Welsh-language work titled Rhys Lewis. His other well-known novels include Enoc Huws (1891) and Gwen Tomos (1894). Before publishing his debut novel, Y Dreflan, in 1881, Owen penned a number of poems under the pen name "Glaslwyn."
